…the Baptist woke for the first time upon the bank of the river. He had followed the birds from the edge of the city far into the desert. He was dressed in sackcloth with ashes upon his head to signify the pilgrimage. The birds of the sky landed gently upon his shoulders, the locust upon which he dined were quiet, and he drank in the river, and received his first words.
“Woe to thee, children of the desert. You are without respite, you serve no god above, but serve the terrors of the earth. I have seen the visions of man and god, and both strike fear into my heart. They tear at my robes, and pull my hair, and gnash my teeth. They visit me at night, both feverish and harrowing. They rape me. I shall deliver unto you a new message, and your ears shall not receive my words, and my voice will grow weak, but it is not unto I that you must place your burdens”.
Upon speaking these words, the sky split open, and began to rain locusts. Their bodies burst upon impact, the desert was splattered with tiny pockets of vitae as the Baptist began his mission, carcasses of insects littering his pathway. Yet, he was untouched, still dry from the ichor of the insects. They nourished him for years, and now the birds picked away at their tiny carapaces, feeding for the first time.
